The Books I Read in 2024: Leadership Lessons for 2025

As a leadership communication coach, I’ve always believed that reading isn’t about racing to hit a number—it’s about immersing in ideas that challenge, inspire, and transform. My goal for 2024 was to read 24 books, a realistic two books a month. While I didn’t reach the finish line (18 books read and 3 half-finished), I gained something far more valuable: insights that I’m excited to implement and share with you as we move into 2025.

Here’s a brief look at the books I read in 2024 and the leadership lessons they taught me:

 1. Boundaries = Freedom by Joseph Nguyen

Lesson: Setting boundaries isn’t restrictive—it’s liberating. In leadership, clear boundaries foster mutual respect, enabling teams to thrive without burnout.

 2. Playing Big by Tara Mohr

Lesson: Stop playing small. Leaders must recognize and challenge their inner critic, trust their instincts, and take bold steps toward visionary goals.

 3. The Four Agreements by Don Miguel Ruiz

Lesson: Be impeccable with your word. Leadership communication begins with honesty, clarity, and integrity in every interaction.

 4. Crucial Conversations

Lesson: Lean into tough conversations with curiosity, not defensiveness. The ability to navigate high-stakes discussions can build stronger, more trusting relationships.

 5. The Communication Book: 44 Ideas

Lesson: Communication is diverse and situational. Leaders must adapt their style to their audience and context for maximum impact.

 6. Learn Like a Pro

Lesson: Lifelong learning is a skill. Leaders who embrace effective learning techniques—like focused attention and spaced repetition—can adapt faster to change.

 7. Mindset by Carol Dweck

Lesson: Cultivate a growth mindset. Leaders must see challenges as opportunities to grow and inspire their teams to do the same.

 8. Charlotte’s Web by E.B. White

Lesson: Compassion and storytelling are timeless leadership traits. Building meaningful connections through empathy creates trust and loyalty.

 9. Deep Work by Cal Newport

Lesson: Focus is a superpower. Prioritize time for deep, uninterrupted work to achieve extraordinary results in a world of distractions.

 10. Vivekananda on Spiritual Leadership

Lesson: Leadership rooted in values and service has a transformative impact. True leaders inspire by example and selflessness.

 11. Confidence by Les Giblin

Lesson: Confidence isn’t arrogance—it’s a quiet assurance in one’s ability. Leaders with genuine confidence empower those around them.

 12. The Coaching Habit by Michael Bungay Stanier

Lesson: Be curious, not directive. Asking the right questions helps teams find their own solutions and build autonomy.

 13. Digital Body Language by Erica Dhawan

Lesson: In the digital age, words, emojis, and punctuation matter. Leaders must master the nuances of online communication to build trust remotely.

 14. Unleashed by Frances Frei and Anne Morriss

Lesson: Empower others to shine. Leadership isn’t about control—it’s about unleashing the potential of your team.

 15. Atomic Habits by James Clear

Lesson: Small habits lead to big changes. Consistency in micro-improvements creates long-term success for leaders and teams.

 16. Maharaja Ranjit Singh

Lesson: Visionary leadership requires inclusivity and resilience. A great leader embraces diverse perspectives while staying steadfast in their mission.

 17. Gravitas by Caroline Goyder

Lesson: Presence matters. Leaders with gravitas command attention through their calm confidence and authenticity.

What I Learned From the Journey

2024’s reading reinforced an important truth: leadership is a journey of continual learning, reflection, and self-improvement.

The key insights I’m taking into 2025 are:

– Focus on the ‘why’: Many of these books emphasize the importance of purpose. Whether it’s through boundaries, habits, or deep work, knowing your “why” drives effective action.

– Embrace growth: A leader’s mindset and habits have a ripple effect. By embracing challenges and focusing on small but consistent improvements, we can lead by example.

– Lead with empathy and communication: Whether it’s navigating tough conversations, adapting communication styles, or embracing digital nuances, effective communication is at the heart of great leadership.

As we approach 2025, my commitment is to apply these lessons in my coaching practice and personal growth. Reading isn’t just about the books—it’s about the actions they inspire.

What’s one book or lesson that has transformed your leadership journey this year? I’d love to hear your recommendations!

Here’s to a year of growth, learning, and leadership in 2025.
